About Our Designs
MALU I KA ʻULU
A Homesteady Collaboration. “Hālau Lahaina, Malu I Ka ʻUlu” is an ʻŌlelo Noʻeau that is used often by our Kaiapuni. “Lahaina is like a large house shaded by breadfruit trees” reminds us of the beauty of Lahainaʻs agroforestry during a time when our rivers flowed to the sea. Pioneer Mill (sugar cane) drastically changed the landscape of Lahaina. Now, in the wake of the wildfires this ʻŌlelo Noʻeau encourages us to keep standing strong against modern day plantations so that we can once again find shade in the ʻulu of Lele.
Hehiau, He Hawaiʻi Au, I am Hawaiʻi, poetically, I am Hawaiian.
Iwikuamoʻo
A Homesteady Collaboration. Spanning from Hōkūpaʻa to Hānaiakamalama, Iwikuamoʻo stretches across a vast area of the night sky. It is prominent during the summer and in it you find the zenith star for Hawaiʻi, Hōkūleʻa. As one of the four principle star lines, Iwikuamoʻo has guided wayfinders for thousands of years. It is truly a backbone, connecting us not only with our cousins throughout the Pacific but to our ancestors who have come before us.
Kau I Ka Waʻa, Hoʻokele I Ka Waʻa
Board the canoe, steer the canoe. Inspired by ʻike kūpuna, this phrase reminds us that every journey requires intention, preparation, vision and kuleana.
Kau I Ka Waʻa - to board the canoe prepared, wiling and able to ʻauamo the kuleana required for the journey ahead, and, to do so intentionally with purpose.
Hoʻokele I Ka Waʻa - to trust in the vision and take action - to steer the way to your destination.
This design honors the sacred connection between Hawaiʻi and Aotearoa - a pilina carved into the very waʻa that carried our ancestors across ka Moana Pākīpika.
Moʻolele
Moʻolele was Lahainaʻs very first sailing canoe that was built by master carver Keola Sequeria. Moʻolele launched in September of 1975, just six months after Hōkūleʻa. Sadly, the canoe burned in the 2023 Lahaina wildfires. This lole was designed to commemorate this important piece of Lahainaʻs history and ensure that Moʻoleleʻs name lives on. E ola!
